• It was never okay to make fake parking passes in the Town of Gibraltar, but now breaking the rule will cost you. The town board passed an ordinance that establishes a $200 fine for making and displaying fake parking permits, using stolen parking permits or lying in order to get one. Penalties for second offenses are $500.
Last year Town of Gibraltar police officer Andy Crowell was alerted to two cars on the town dock parking lot that had permits with the same identification number. One of the permits was a photocopy, and Crowell said it was tough to tell the difference.
“We’ll just have to keep an eye out for it,” Crowell said. “I think with the few steps we’ve taken and the publishing of the new ordinances we’re hoping we’ll just take care of it without too much trouble.”
• The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) proposed a $70,000 fine to the Kewaunee Power Station for violating agency requirements. According to a NRC press release, a commission inspection showed that between August 2009 and December 2011, a former fire brigade trainer conducted training sessions instead of actual fire drills, then lied on forms. The violation is considered to have low to moderate safety significance. Investigation will continue. The plant is currently decommissioning.
• The Kewaunee Power Station closing to have small impact on Door County economy. Ten plant employees, just two percent, live in Door County, according to Mark Kanz of Dominion Energy.
Dominion used to contract employees to help refuel the plant every 18 months, and those contracted employees sought housing at local lodging facilities. Kanz estimated very few stayed in Door County.
“I would think it probably has a greater impact on Manitowoc County, Brown County and the lodging facilities we have in Kewaunee County,” Kanz said. “I wouldn’t rule out that there were a few folks who had to stay in Sturgeon Bay but my suspicion is it probably wasn’t a huge impact.”
Jennifer Brown of the Kewaunee County Economic Development Corporation said many families affected by the closing plant are relocating, affecting many schools in Kewaunee and Manitowoc Counties, but the plant closing is unlikely to affect Southern Door School District. No students from Kewaunee County are enrolled in Southern Door School District.
Dominion Energy announced plans to close the Kewaunee Power Station, a nuclear plant, in February. Decommissioning, or closing, the plant could take up to 60 years. • According to a Joel Ponshock of Baylake Bank, rumors of the sale of the Maxwelton Braes Golf Resort in Baileys Harbor are premature. While there is a party interested in buying the lodge and condo development but not the golf course, a good deal of work remains before the deal can be closed. Baylake Bank has owned the property since 2010 when the golf resort went into foreclosure. The entire property was listed at $1.5 million at bankmarketplace.com. National golf broker Links Capital Advisors originally listed the sale price at $2.75 million.
