What’s Coming Up in Door County?

• The Town of Jacksonport is considering purchasing property to expand Lakeside Park. At the town board meeting on July 24, Board Chairman Alvin Birnschein said that the town is in negotiations with the owner of the property, which is located just south of the park and contains 297 feet of beachfront.

The property has been appraised at $750,000. Birnschein said that the town is looking to apply for grants that would cover almost all of the costs of the purchase, but voter approval would be required in order for the town to move forward with the purchase.

• Three new teachers have been hired by the Washington Island School District and will be starting this fall, while the district still searches for a fourth teacher.

Washington Island superintendent Timothy Raymond says that two of the new teachers will be replacing the school’s previous technology and math/science teachers, who retired at the end of this school year, while the third new teacher has been hired to teach high school special education.

The school is still looking for a new part-time history teacher to replace the last of this year’s three retirees.

• The next Bayview Bridge Closure Opportunity Meeting will be held at the Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center on August 1 at 8:30 am. Representatives from the Department of Transportation are expected to bring revised detour routes to the meeting.
