What’s Coming Up in Door County?

• The Sturgeon Bay School District is considering shopping out its bussing service. Superintendent Joe Stutting says the move is a cost-cutting measure to help the district manage the $1.5 million deficit it’s looking at next year.

Stutting says the shift from district-run to private bussing will save the district $200,000 to $300,000 a year, as well as some stress.

“We’re not experts in bussing,” said Stutting. “We can better maintain and clean our buildings by not having those people drive bus.”

Stutting is hopeful that all of the district’s current drivers could apply and get hired by the private company the district goes contracts, although he acknowledges that some of them may choose not to.

Stutting also says the move would reduce the district’s full-time employee count by three, but retirements should allow the district to move forward without layoffs.
