What’s Coming Up in Door County?

The Town of Sevastopol will conduct its Open Book property assessment inspection on May 31 at 10 am at the town hall. A certified assessor from Associated Appraisals will be available to property owners. The Board of Review will be held on June 17.

Beginning June 4, all future Sister Bay Plan Commission meetings will be held on the first Tuesday of the month at 5:30 pm. The date was changed to reduce meeting conflicts and reduce the time period between Plan Commission and Board of Trustee meetings.

The Sevastopol Historical Society and Brad Birmingham will present “Rich Family Traditions” at 2 pm on May 19 at the Sevastopol Town Hall. The program is free and everyone is invited as Birmingham “reviews his family pedigree,” including the Long, Thenell, Gmach, Geitner and Birmingham families. Refreshments will be provided.

The Village of Egg Harbor will save almost $675,000 during the next 20 years thanks to smart investments and a little skepticism of the federal government. “In 2009 the village borrowed about $3.6 million, and issued the debt under the Build America Bond program, whereby the federal government would subsidize the interest rate back to the local governments if the bonds were issued with taxable notes,” said Egg Harbor Village Administrator Josh Van Lieshout.

But before the trustees went through with the Build America Bond program they included an extraordinary call feature that allowed the village to refinance its debt if the federal government fell through on its promise, which it did in the March 1 sequester cuts.
