WI Fellowship of Poets Announce Poetry Awards

The Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets (WFOP) awarded its 2012 Wisconsin Chapbook Prize and 2012 Muse Prize for Excellence in Poetry at the organization’s conference on April 27 and 28 in Madison.

The Chapbook Prize was awarded to Elizabeth Tornes, Lac du Flambeau, for her chapbook Snowbound. Her poems have been published widely in literary journals, most recently in Ploughshares and A Garden of Forking Paths Anthology. She has also published a collection of oral histories of tribal elders, Memories of Lac du Flambeau Elders (University of Wisconsin Press, 2004). Honorable Mention was awarded to Lisa Vihos, Sheboygan, for her chapbook, A Brief History of Mail. The judge was New Hampshire Poet Laureate Walter Butts.

The Muse Prize for Excellence in Poetry was awarded to Judith Harway, Shorewood, for her poem, “Swimming in the Sky.” Victoria Keenan, Milwaukee, received second place for her poem “Beaufort.” Third place honors went to Patricia Kilday, Oshkosh, for “January Clothesline.” Honorable Mentions were awarded to Joseph Engel, Kenosha; Mary C. Rowin, Middleton; and Steve Tomasko, Middleton. The judge was Duluth Poet Laureate Sheila Packa.

The Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets is a non-profit, statewide organization with a 62-year history of promoting poetry. The annual Muse Prize contest is open to all Wisconsin residents and is funded by an endowment set up by the fellowship to recognize and reward poets.
