Willy Porter at the Peg Egan PAC

Willy Porter’s music demonstrates admirably that the technical excellence of his guitar playing will never overwhelm the essence of the song itself. In perfect symbiosis, the two disciplines of performance and songwriting combine together to create the unique work for which he is admired by professional peers and audiences alike. Door County visitors and residents will be treated to a free concert from Porter at the Peg Egan Performing Arts Center in Egg Harbor on Sunday, July 19 at 7 pm.

Frets Magazine calls Porter “a genre-defying maverick,” and this description seems to fit him well. Having toured with artists as diverse as Jeff Beck and Tori Amos, Porter capitalizes on his experience as a seasoned live performer on his newest album, How to Rob a Bank. Each song on the disc is a fresh cross-pollination of styles, genres and musical forms.

Porter’s acoustic guitar skills have drawn comparisons with those of Leo Kottke and the late Michael Hedges. On one memorable night in Nashville, in front of a room full of some of the world’s best guitarists, Porter, with just his voice and an acoustic guitar, earned a standing ovation from an audience primed to see electric guitar hero Jeff Beck. His unassuming nature – there isn’t one ounce of rock-star posturing in his blood – has always been part of his appeal.

In case of rain, the concert will be held at the Orchards Golf Course in Egg Harbor. Concession for the show will be provided by Harbor Landing, and a meet & greet after party will be held immediately after the show at the Door County Outpost Gallery & Café.

All concerts at the Peg Egan PAC are free to the general public. Please remember to bring your lawn chairs and blankets. For more information please call 920.493.5979.
