‘Windward’ Sculpture Dedicated in Egg Harbor

Around 50 people turned out Saturday, May 26, for the dedication of the Village of Egg Harbor’s newest sculpture, “Windward,” overlooking the village beach at Bay View Terrace Park. Central Wisconsin-based blacksmith/wrought iron artist Boleslaw Kochanowski was on hand for the dedication almost one year after he was chosen as the artist for the project. “I don’t usually get this in the shop,” he said to the applause he got from the audience. Kochanowski said he chose cranes for the subject because they are symbols of happiness, good fortune and longevity. “And cranes marry for life. Isn’t that wonderful?” The sculpture also celebrates sailing – it can be viewed as a sailboat – at the behest of the humble family that commissioned the sculpture and do not want to be named. Kochanowski said the iron will oxidize with time and turn a dark chestnut color.
