It’s a weekend of celebrating the quiet season in Door County! Head to the lake side to celebrate Baileys Harbor’s Winter Carnival and the 3rd Annual Pond Hockey tournament or head to the bay side for Fish Creek’s 29th annual Winter Festival. No matter where you spend the weekend, you’re sure to stow away some fantastic cold weather memories.
Friday, February 5
The Door County Reads 2016 keynote address “Understanding Islam: Fact and Fallacy” will be presented by Steven Fink, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He is an expert on Islam in the United States and his research focuses on Islamophobia and connections between religion and sports. He will help to demystify the Muslim community. Archana Patel of Kinara Urban Eatery in Sturgeon Bay will provide ethnic food for the event. 7 pm.
Saturday, February 6
Live music, a winter farmers’ market, dog sledding and a bonfire are just a few of the events in store during this weekend’s Winter Carnival on Kangaroo Lake and throughout Baileys Harbor.
Fish Creek will be alive with the sights and sounds of winter during the 29th annual celebration, bringing back its unusual lineup of games – the Stumpf Fiddle Contest, bike toss and kick ball among them – to Clark Park.
Enjoy the solo tunes of longtime guitarist and songwriter Dan Navarro, formerly of the acclaimed acoustic duo Lowen & Navarro. 7 pm.
Enjoy the Peninsula State Park during the one-mile loop lined with hundreds of lit candles. There will also be a bonfire, cookies and cider at the warming shelter. 5:30 pm.
Sunday, February 7
Take part in a weeklong celebration of ice and snow with food, fun, adventure and entertainment. Sample chili entries for $5 at the annual Chili Cook Off, enter a photo contest, or register with the Lions Club to participate in the Fishing Derby.
Take part in a Ladies of the Vine salad-soup-and-dessert event at von Stiehl Winery in Algoma, complete with the winery’s wines, a bucket raffle and discounts. 1 pm.
Watch the Carolina Panthers take on the Denver Broncos during Super Bowl 50 on CBS beginning at 5:30 pm.
