Winter Hardships

Door County native George Evenson grew up on a farm during the 1930s and ’40s, when weathering winter’s cold, snow and bitter winds was a challenge. On Aug. 3, Evenson, who currently serves as the Door County Historical Society board president, will present a special program titled “Winter on the Farm.” The presentation will be held in the Vignes School at the Heritage Village at Big Creek at 2 pm.

Although Door County’s coldest winter on record is held by 1903 – 1904, Evenson recalls the hardships of living and working on a farm through the dark months of the year. “We wore sheepskin coats and high-top boots to keep warm while we did our chores,” said Evenson. “My talk will be about what the routine of living through winter on a farm was like. And it wasn’t easy.”

Heritage Village at Big Creek, located at 2041 Michigan St., Sturgeon Bay, is open daily from 1:30 – 3:30 pm.
