WNAF Awards Gibraltar’s “Viking Voice”

The Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation (WNAF) recently announced winners of its High School Better Newspaper Contest for the 2010-11 academic year.

The Viking Voice of Gibraltar High School in Fish Creek, advised by Lauren Bremer, received the following honors:

• Second Award, Feature Writing: “The Anniversary of the Gilbraltar Legend” by Zephyr Ciesar

• Third Award, General Reporting: “OLPS Program” by Samantha Phillips

• Honorable Mention, General Reporting: “November Elections” by Theo Hitzeman

• Honorable Mention, General Reporting: “Dickinson Poetry Read” by Marty Witteborg

• Honorable Mention, Best Editorial: “Bullying at Schools for Sexuality” by Katie Buske

The statewide Better Newspaper Contest recognizes excellence, encourages students to pursue journalism careers and acknowledges that simply participating in high school newspaper activities helps encourage lifelong learning and better citizenship.

This year’s contest garnered 261 entries from 20 Wisconsin high schools. When possible, Wisconsin Newspaper Association members from around the state will visit local high school year-end awards ceremonies, delivering plaques and certificates to winning schools.

Each school newspaper winning first place in the General Excellence categories will be awarded a $1,000 William E. Branen Scholarship during the WNA annual convention, set to take place February 23-24, 2012 in Madison.
