Wood Duck Nest Box Workshop

The Ridges Sanctuary will host a workshop on building a wood duck nest box on March 19 at 2 pm. At one time, the beautifully colored wood duck was the most abundant waterfowl in eastern North America, but by the late 19th century the population was in serious decline. By the beginning of the 20th century, wood ducks had all but disappeared due to habitat loss and hunting. The dramatic rebound of wood duck populations since that time can be largely attributed to protection provided by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. However, it was also received a boost from the implementation of artificial nesting structures or wood duck boxes.

Wood duck boxes provide an excellent opportunity for anyone to become involved in wildlife management. By building, installing and maintaining nest boxes, you gain insight into the interesting aspects of wood duck nesting and reproduction while helping to boost local populations. The Ridges Wood Duck Nest Box Workshop will be held just in time to get your nest box installed for the spring wood duck nesting season.

Workshop fees are $25/adult for Ridges members, $30/adult for the general public and $10 for children under 18. The fee includes material for one nest box. Additional kits are available for $20 each. Meet at The Ridges Cabins, 8288 County Q in Baileys Harbor. Space is limited and registration is required. Register online at RidgesSanctuary.org or call 920.839.2802.
