Woodcrest Road Won’t Get Bike Lanes

Village Trustee Nate Bell had pushed the Village of Sister Bay to explore options for widening Woodcrest Road and adding bike lanes, but the Town of Liberty Grove, which shares responsibility for the road, said it wasn’t willing to spend more to add bike lanes to the road.

“To add the bike lanes would add $491,000 to the project,” said Dan Klansky, director of public works. “That’s two years of road repairs.”

The road, which Klansky described as “falling apart,” will, however, be widened from 20 feet to 24 feet, in part to accommodate increased traffic from vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians who use the road as a bypass around the village.

The village’s Parks Committee has also discussed adding new, softer sand to the beach. The beach was replenished with larger, rougher sand years ago, in part because the heavier sand doesn’t wash away as quickly.

Klansky said it would cost about $5,500 to add the new sand, but the money isn’t in the village budget. He said it could come from funds budgeted to complete a sidewalk from the bathrooms to the beach, but the committee said it didn’t want to sacrifice the path for the sand in 2022.
