Woolly Comes Home

Sturgeon Bay – The goal has been accomplished to rehome Woolly by Labor Day. The March of the Mammoth began early Tuesday morning from Edgewood Orchard Galleries in Fish Creek to Bayview Park on Sturgeon Bay’s west side.

Gallery owner J.R. Jarosh said the convoy left Edgewood around 6 am and arrived in Sturgeon Bay just after 7 am. A planned police escort guided the group through the city and across the Steel Bridge. A city crew and crane greeted the convoy, and Woolly, created by artist Carl Vanderheyden, was lifted and put into place in his new, forever home.

Woolly has lived at Edgewood for the past four years. Sturgeon Bay resident Chris Kellems launched a fundraiser to purchase the beast for $26,000 and transport it to the city that lies at the eastern terminus of the Ice Age Trail. The Sturgeon Bay Arts Board and Sturgeon Bay Common Council agreed to accept the donation to purchase the sculpture.

When the Peninsula Pulse last checked with Kellems in early July, almost all the money had already been raised. Destination Sturgeon Bay handled the fundraiser, making all donations charitable contributions.
