Word Women Poetry Displayed on Newport Poetry Trail

A new group of poems graces the Newport State Park Poetry Trail, now in its third year. The exhibit features the works of Word Women, a Northern Door poetry critique group.

Word Women try to keep their group size to 10, as this is an ideal size for sharing ideas and helping each other grow. Members whose works are displayed include Sharon Auberle, Francha Barnard, Jude Genereaux, Cynthia Johnson, Estella Lauter, Nancy Rafal, Cynthia Oliver, and Karen Wilson.

The poetry trail has 10 stands, each with two poems. The trail begins across the parking lot from the Welcome Center and wanders through a wooded area and open land.

During the fall and winter months the poetry of Lorine Niedecker (1903-1970) will be featured on the trail. Niedecker was inspired by the Ridges Sanctuary to write “Wintergreen Ridge.” Lines from this poem will also appear on the new Baileys Harbor Community Mural.

The current exhibit will be displayed through September. Newport State Park is on County NP, east of Highway 42 near Gills Rock. For more information, call 920.854.2500.
