Working Towards a National Interpretive Center

Welcome to the Notes from the Grove, providing Liberty Grove residents and visitors tid bits of information about goings on in town government.

• At the first regular Town Board meeting for June, the board approved the nomination of Lou Covotsos to the Fire District Exploratory Committee, Diane Kirkland was appointed to the Plan Commission and Anne Miller to the DC Coastal Byways Committee.

• Supervisor Nancy Goss gave a report on the first meeting of the three tiers Niagara Escarpment Interpretive Center Committee. All but two members were able to make the meeting which was held in Sturgeon Bay. A number of the members also toured the new Grand View Park in Ellison Bay prior to the meeting. Goss reported further that the committee feels they should work toward a National Interpretive Center to be located in Liberty Grove.

• The Town Board approved the request of the Gills Rock Advancement Association to increase the Town contribution from $3,000 to $5,000. Room Tax revenues will be used for the contribution.

• The Town Board discussed the replacement of septic tanks and the installation of a monitoring system at the Ellison Bay Community Center. Two 3,000-gallon tanks will be installed this fall in advance of a proposed Mound System installation. It was agreed that using monies in the reserve fund would be appropriate for the project.

• The Heritage Road Sub-committee has sent its final draft of the proposed program to the Highway Committee for its review. The Highway Committee will then send its recommendation to the Town Board for their consideration/approval.

• It is anticipated a report from Baudhuin Engineering and Fedderly Consulting will be presented in the near future. The firms are working at the proposed improvements to Isle View Road.

• According to the United States Census Bureau, the town of Liberty Grove has a total area of 189.5 square miles (490.7 km²), of which, 53.6 square miles (138.8 km²) of it is land and 135.9 square miles (352.0 km²) of it (72 percent) is water.

• Door County, in terms of square miles, is the largest county in Wisconsin and Liberty Grove is the largest town within the county.
