Write Family History at Free Write On Class

Sturgeon Bay Library and Write On, Door County pair up to present “HisStory, HerStory, YourStory: Writing About the Past,” a special free writing class for older adults who want to write life or family histories. The free class takes place over six weeks on Wednesdays beginning Oct. 14, 2 – 3:30 pm, and concluding Nov. 18. Classes take place at the Sturgeon Bay Library, 107 S. 4th Ave., Sturgeon Bay.

Have you been wanting to write your own history or tell stories about your family? Perhaps you want to write the history of the family farm or let others know interesting facts about the town where you grew up. Everyone has stories that need to be told, but getting started can be difficult. This six-week program will help you get the stories out of your head and on to paper.

Instructors Ann Heyse and Dee Paulsen, along with guest instructors, will provide practical and helpful writing advice as well as offer one-on-one assistance to program participants. Whether you have one story or many, whether you have written a lot in the past or not at all, this class can help. As an optional goal, participants will be encouraged to submit stories to Recollection Wisconsin, a website dedicated to recording events, people, and places in Wisconsin’s past.

The first half of the class will be general instruction in the craft of writing with exercises designed to help you tell your story. The second half of the class will offer optional individual assistance by the instructors and other volunteers. Participation at all sessions is encouraged but not required. Light refreshments will be served. For more information email [email protected].
