Write On Hosts Open House Celebrating Children’s Books

Write On, Door County will hold its third annual open house on June 12, 11 – 4 pm, on the grounds of the organization’s site in Juddville (4177 Juddville Road, Fish Creek). In honor of National Children’s Day, the afternoon will celebrate children’s literature. The authors of eight different picture books and books for young readers will read from their work, engage with children and parents, and sign copies of their books.

Most of Write On’s Open House authors have written books with a strong Door County connection. Scheduled to appear are Jill Harding (The Sign Fairy), Ann Heyse (Good Morning, Door County), Kate Kapolnek (ABC Door County), Miranda Paul (Water is Water), Roberta Raymond (Three Sea Tales), Mary Ellen Sisulak (Pinklieee!), Harold Thorpe (Wyatt’s Woods).

Miranda Paul’s newest picture book, Trainbots, will be published on June 7. This is a rare opportunity to meet the heavily scheduled author while her book is brand-new. Paul is the author of numerous books for young readers and is on the Regional Council of the Society of Book Writers and Illustrators (Wisconsin Chapter).

Door County teens are also scheduled to read from their own creative work, including the winner of the 2016 Norbert Blei Scholarship, graduating Gibraltar Area Schools senior Samuel Thomas Shabbit, and participants in the Life Imitates Art writing program with young adult novelist Liza Wiemer. Teens will also be on hand to talk with others about their experiences in Write On’s programs and encourage participation in the newly formed Teen Council.

The June 12 Write On Open House will also feature popcorn, cotton candy and other refreshments; a scavenger hunt; face-painting; and some surprise guests.

All Open House activities will take place outdoors, rain or shine, in the surrounding Write On meadow and woods.
