Write On, Door County Presents An Evening with Michael Perry

Author and humorist Michael Perry is coming to the Kress Pavilion in Egg Harbor on Nov. 6 for an intimate event to benefit Write On, Door County. 

An Evening with Michael Perry will include a program by Perry – the New York Times best-selling author of Population 485 and Truck: A Love Story – plus dinner and beverages sponsored by local restaurants, producers and purveyors. 

Raised on a small Midwestern dairy farm, Perry put himself through nursing school while working on a ranch in Wyoming, then detoured into writing. Now he lives with his wife and two daughters in rural Wisconsin, where he serves with the local volunteer fire and rescue service and is an intermittent pig farmer. He also hosts the nationally syndicated Tent Show Radio, performs widely as a humorist and tours with his band, the Long Beds. Perry spent a week as a Write On, Door County writer-in-residence in July 2016 while working on a stage adaptation of Population 485. 

“As a writer,” Perry said, “I find my greatest privilege lies not in telling my story; it lies in being trusted to tell the story of another.”

But of all of his experiences, Perry said the single most meaningful thing he has ever done is serve 12 years beside his neighbors on the New Auburn Area Fire Department.

The event will include cocktails from Wickman House, beer from Door County Brewing Co. and wine supplied by Main Street Market. Passed appetizers and dinner from Thyme Cuisine will follow.

All proceeds will benefit programming at Write On, Door County. In addition to hosting dozens of writers-in-residence each year at its Juddville home, Write On collaborates with schools, nonprofits and businesses to help Door County residents tell their stories and explore the world of the written word. 

Door County Event Planners, Flora Flower Shop, Isely Coffee, Peninsula Bookman and the Peninsula Pulse have all pitched in to create this rare opportunity to spend a special evening with one of the greatest chroniclers of rural Wisconsin life.
