Write On Gala Celebrates Literature

Readers, writers and other lovers of the written word gathered Sept. 29 at Write On, Door County’s Writing Center to celebrate storytelling of all kinds during the organization’s annual gala.

It was a night of new beginnings as well, as Al DeGenova was introduced as Write On’s new executive director, and founding member Anne Emerson announced the opening of Witalison Woods: a 20-acre wooded area gifted to Write On by the late Sara Lee Witalison that will remain natural, with a few Aldo Leopold-style benches.

Poet Max Garland provided the keynote address, stepping in for Carrie Fountain, who was unable to attend because of illness. Garland expanded on the Poem Forest theme by reading from works of his own that highlight nature, trees and water. The crowd was taken in by his humor and depth of poetry.
