Writing Through Illness

Write On, Door County announces a free writing workshop for people experiencing illness, either their own of that of a loved one. Led by journalist, editor, photographer Heidi Hodges, the workshop will begin April 15, 10 am – noon, at Hope United Church of Christ, 141 S. 12th Avenue, Sturgeon Bay. Sessions will be held every other Tuesday: April 15, 29, May 13, 27, June 10.

The workshop will explore public outlets for writing, such as blogs, as well as personal writing. Also explored are writing as a means to emotional well-being and the value of documenting treatment.

Heidi Hodges has written a weekly column for the Door County Advocate since 2001, never missing an installment. In 2008, she learned that she had breast cancer. Hodges wrote about her diagnosis in her weekly column. Her writings about her diagnosis and treatment evolved into a one-issue magazine sponsored by Ministry Door County Medical Center and received first place at the National Newspaper Association’s annual awards.

Heidi will discuss how writing helped her through her illness and how it can help others during the five-session interactive class.
