It’s March – or “Farch” for those of us who feel like the months of February and March extend the winter well past its welcome. It’s that time of year when the itch to emerge from hibernation is simultaneously met by the pull to stay inside just a little longer.
Thankfully, when you do decide to venture out, there are plenty of local restaurants that are open year round and ready to serve you as the last few days of winter give way to the upcoming season. During the coming weeks, loosen your belt and pull up a chair as we highlight one restaurant from each area of the county.
Where to go: Upper Northern Door
Where to eat: Mink River Basin
The upper portion of the peninsula can seem awfully quiet this time of year. But open the doors to the Mink River Basin, 12010 Hwy 42 in Ellison Bay, and the atmosphere that greets you is anything but.
Family-owned and -operated since January 2000, the restaurant offers casual ambience and an extensive menu that fully embrace the relaxed vibe that’s synonymous with Door County. A mix of local regulars and tourists gather there, and the menu showcases fresh local fish, pizza, burgers and more. Inventive specials such as the Asian-infused Scotch egg and hand-dipped walleye Reuben that were featured last month put a delicious culinary twist on classic pub fare.
Bourbon drinkers – and whiskey enthusiasts in general – who belly up to the bar are in for a treat with more than 60 bourbons to choose from, plus a lengthy list of rye, Japanese, French and Irish whiskey and Scotch options. All of this is complemented by a robust selection of beer and wine and a knowledgeable bar staff to help you select the perfect pairing for your meal and preferences.
And although the Mink River Basin is a great place to gather in the winter to watch a game or catch up with friends, enjoying a meal or a drink there in the summer offers an entirely new experience, thanks to its outdoor patio seating, outdoor bar and lawn games. And right about now, as we count down the days until spring, it’s good to have something to look forward to.
