YMCA Expands Meal Program

For the past seven years, the YMCA has made it a priority to address the issue of food insecurity for area children, which becomes a critical need during the out-of-school months. The Door County Y currently serves fresh, nutritious meals through the Summer Foods Program to more than 500 children. This program has served more than 25,000 free meals each summer at 18 different locations to local youth.

This year, the YMCA has two more distribution sites in Fish Creek, one at Gibraltar School and one across the street at the Northern Door YMCA. Support for this program comes from various community partners, as well generous individuals, who have supported the recent expansion of the program to meet the entire community’s needs.

Through the support of generous donors, the YMCA was able to raise enough funding to purchase a van dedicated to the Summer Foods Program. Staff can now efficiently transport the meals, prepared in the Boys & Girls Club Kitchen, to sites from Algoma all the way to Fish Creek.
