Door County YMCA leaders have evaluated what they’ve learned during the pandemic and have a new vision for how to better serve the community in the future.
“We have, without a doubt, understood the need for an expansion here at the Sturgeon Bay Program Center,” said CEO Heidi Erickson. “When schools were closed – and even as they opened up again – we provided meals and snacks to children to help families stretch their grocery budget.”
As the Y reopened, staff moved some equipment to make space for social distancing, but that reduced space for youth and senior programming. Some fitness classes met outside as one solution.
“As more people feel comfortable returning to the Y,” Erickson said, “we realize the increased demand and need for not just physical activity, but also for social-engagement opportunities.”Therefore, the YMCA is looking to expand its social areas with a new social lounge that will provide a board room and community meeting space, a new Wellness Center and a new Y Activity Center to improve and expand program spaces and house the summer camp and after-school program.
