2017 Hal Prize Deadline is May 1

The submission deadline for this year’s Hal Prize contest is quickly approaching. Poets, photographers and fiction/nonfiction writers are encouraged to submit their creative efforts by Monday, May 1 for a chance to be published in the Peninsula Pulse’s annual Literary Issue.

Conducted annually since 2001, the mission of the Peninsula Pulse’s Hal Prize is to encourage and appreciate artistic expression through various literary forms and photography. The contest has showcased works from individuals of all ages and backgrounds – novice writers and photographers to professionals.

This year’s judges are author and English professor David Haynes, historian and Wisconsin Life Executive Producer Erika Janik, nationally renowned photographer Kevin J. Miyazaki, and the poetry editors of Milwaukee literary journal cream city review (Alessandra Simmons, Soham Patel and Tobias Wray).

The contest offers publication in the Peninsula Pulse’s annual Literary Issue, reaching a readership of 18,000. Cash awards of up to $150, a week stay at Write On, Door County (a literary retreat located in the heart of the Door Peninsula), a class at Peninsula School of Art (a nationally recognized year-round destination for artists and art appreciators), and other prizes will be awarded.

The Hal Prize is presented in collaboration with Write On, Door County, a nonprofit organization promoting writing and reading to year-round and seasonal residents in the county.
