A new addition to the dogs available from the Humane Society is Shelby, a girl surrendered in early June. Shelby is a spayed female Lab/Husky mix, with a touch of Beagle visible around her eyes. Shelby’s previous owner left her for an extended period in a commercial kennel in Door County, but finally the owner could not afford additional boarding without any compensation.

The staff has enjoyed having her for the past several weeks. She can be reserved at first, but warms quickly. Shelby is 47 pounds and approximately seven to eight years old. She would be happy to be adopted into a quiet home where she can relax and re-gain the security of loving care.

Waiting patiently in his lobby cage, Virgil has years of affectionate companionship to offer an individual or family. A three- to five-year-old cat weighing 12 pounds, he is both calm and comical; his coat markings and coloration are exceptional. Virgil’s only condition for adoption is no dogs in the household. He does not get along with dogs of any size or temperament.

The annual meeting of the Door County Humane Society was held in Sturgeon Bay, where the director and Board of Directors shared the “state of the shelter” information, and all members present had the opportunity to ask questions or offer suggestions. To become a member – and the $25 fee has not changed for 10 years – call 746.1111 or visit http://www.dooranimals.com. All adoptable animals are profiled on the site.

Adoption costs are $85 for cats and kittens, $120 for dogs, and $60 for puppies. All animals are vaccinated, and spayed or neutered. Dogs have had a behavioral assessment.

The Door County Humane Society, located at 3475 Park Drive (County PD)
in Sturgeon Bay, is open for adoption Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from noon – 4 pm.
