“Livin’ large” isn’t just an expression at the Door County Humane Society – several of the long-term cats have somewhat larger figures than they should. It’s time to get them into a house where they can actively play with people or other pets. Through the end of the July, there is a Fat Cat Special adoption fee of $50 for those pleasantly plump cats at the shelter. There are 15 cats on that select list, including Mitty, who was adopted as a kitten in August 2007, but returned to the shelter in September 2010 due to allergies. She is gorgeous and plenty agile to make the top of the cat tree where she espies the whole lobby world. Mitty is fascinated by water, sitting in the sink and grabbing at droplets.

Puppies are relatively rare at the shelter, so it’s always a delight to watch a frisky puppy scamper and play in the yard. Such is the case with Dusty, a three to four month old whose ears fly out as he dashes from one side of the fence to the other. A Forestville family with a small child chose this boy from a man with a box o’ puppies in a Minnesota campground. Several weeks later, back in Wisconsin, they decided a puppy and a toddler demanded too much work, so the puppy came into the Humane Society. He’s a wiggle worm, curious about everything and everyone, racing on to the next toy, treat or thing to explore. Dusty’s feet show that he will be a big boy; the consulting vet suggested the description “extra-large mixed breed.” Dusty has had his puppy shots since coming in, and will be neutered shortly. The adoption cost for Dusty is $120.

Adoption costs are $85 for cats and kittens, $120 for dogs, and $60 for puppies. All animals are vaccinated, and spayed or neutered. Dogs have had a behavioral assessment.

The Door County Humane Society, located at 3475 Park Drive (County PD)
in Sturgeon Bay, is open for adoption Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from noon – 4 pm. For more information call 920.746.1111 or visit http://www.doorcountyhumanesociety.org.
