Dear Mary Pat,

I have buyer’s remorse of sorts. I went in for a haircut last week and my stylist wanted to drastically change my look. I went from being a brunette to a blond and she took the length up about six inches. At first I really liked it, but now I’m not so sure. All my friends and family really seem to like it, but I’m afraid it’s not me. Should I call my stylist or should I just get over it?

Dear Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow,

I think the only thing you probably need is a little more time to get used to it. If you wrote in saying “I HATE MY HAIR!!!” that would be another story all together. You obviously have a completely different style and seeing a different color reflected back in the mirror is an adjustment that won’t happen overnight. If after a little while you still aren’t 100 percent comfortable with your color and style, make an appointment with your stylist to let him/her know what you are thinking. He or she might be able to make a subtle adjustment that might make all of the difference.

Below are several tips to avoid future disappointment in the salon chair:

• Don’t bring in a picture of Victoria Beckham’s latest hair style and think you will leave the salon looking exactly the same. Your stylist should be able to tell you what will work with your hair texture and facial features.

• Not all colors look good on every person. Make sure you are getting a shade that matches your coloring.

• Don’t tell your stylist that you really like your haircut when you really don’t. Be honest before you leave the salon so that some sort of correction can be made if possible.

• Don’t be pressured into a style you are not sure about. If your stylist wants to make a radical change and you aren’t entirely sold on the idea, think about it until your next appointment.

• At the end of the day, don’t overreact. It’s only hair and it will grow.

Good luck,

Mary Pat
