Dear Mary Pat,

My friend recently had an awkward experience at a movie theater. The seats were packed and the couple sitting next to them was ticked off when she got up to go the bathroom mid-way through the film. When she tried to get back to her seat, they wouldn’t even budge, she literally had to push against their knees and the couple was sighing and acting very irritated.

Signed,

Dear Move Over Already at the Movies,

Having to move your legs to let someone by at a movie theater hardly seems like a taxing event. Even if the movie required extra attention, the couple should have been more gracious and let your friend by without all the passive aggressive behavior. What was the movie that so captured their attention I wonder? I haven’t seen anything lately that was so complex that 10 seconds of someone blocking the screen (twice) would have made that much of a difference. Subtitled films are harder to follow, but I haven’t seen anything come through Sturgeon Bay with a subtitle during recent years that I can recall.

Talking, texting and cell phones are rude in a movie theater, but not getting up to have to use the bathroom midway through the film. With the size of soda now, it would be surprising if someone didn’t have to get up during a movie. This couple should move to New York City where the size of sodas are restricted; maybe that’s another unseen benefit of the far reaching soda law…not as many bathroom breaks in movie theaters.

Good luck,

Mary Pat
