Earlier this month, the Institute of Medicine released a report called Delivering High-Quality Cancer Care, addressing the quality of cancer care in the United States and recommending improvement strategies.

After discovering that the expected increase in cancer patients more than 65-years-old will strain the current system, the institute recommended improving care in six ways: engaging patients, better preparing the work force, using evidence-based care, learning more about health care information technology, translating evidence into clinical practice and providing more accessible and affordable care.

14 million

People with cancer in the United States.

1.6 million

New cancer cases diagnosed each year in the United States.

53

Percent of cancer diagnoses in individuals more than 65-years-old in 2012.

$125 billion

Rise in cost of cancer care in 2010.

45

Expected percent increase in the number of new cancer patients by 2030.
