Two educational programs sponsored by The Ridges Sanctuary in Baileys Harbor will feature dragonflies, one of Door County’s most unique wild predators. “Another Look at ‘Snake Doctors’” is the topic for the Thursday evening lecture on July 8, with Paul Burton. The presentation begins at 7 pm at the Baileys Harbor Town Hall as a part of the “Lake Lessons” lecture series, which continues through mid-August. It is free and open to the public, though donations will be accepted.

Burton will share information on what makes dragonflies such unique insects and incredible aerial hunters. He will also discuss the natural history of the Hine’s Emerald Dragonfly, a federally endangered species that makes its home in Door County.

On Friday, July 9, weather permitting, The Ridges’ annual dragonfly workshop and field trip will be led by Burton and Naturalist Karen Newbern. After a brief introduction to dragonflies, participants will receive a handout identifying the common dragonflies of The Ridges, Mud Lake, and Pickerel Pond areas. The group will travel to the Moonlight Bay shoreline and hike near Pickerel Pond while examining dragonflies.

The workshop runs from 9 – 11 am. Participants should meet at the Ridges’ Nature Center, 8288 Hwy Q, Bailey’s Harbor. Cost for this workshop is $10 per person, or $15 for an adult couple. Children under 18 years are free if accompanied by an adult. To pre-register, call 920.839.2802 or email [email protected].
