AROUND THE DOOR: Workshop Fire

Firefighters battle a blaze in a workshop at 3162 Kangaroo Beach Road in Baileys Harbor on Monday morning, Nov. 6. Baileys Harbor fire chief Brian Zak said the call came in around 8:30 am from the owner who had lit the woodstove, gone back into his house for a cup of coffee, and returned to find “the fire fully involved at that point.” Firefighters fought the blaze externally, using about 7,000 gallons of water and 10 gallons of firefighting foam, with all units on site for about three hours. No other structures were in jeopardy, but they did have to work with Wisconsin Public Service to disconnect the power on the workshop that was connected to the owner’s house.

“So we worked with them to get that disconnected and made a phone call to a local electrician to mount a temp [power source] right away to keep his house up and running,” Zak said. The approximate 30-x-50 building was a total loss. Area fire departments provided mutual aid, including Sister Bay-Liberty Grove, Egg Harbor, Ephraim, Jacksonport, Gibraltar and Sturgeon Bay.
