Bjِrklunden’s June Seminar Offerings

Lawrence University’s Björklunden is offering three seminars in early June: “Reflections on Storytelling: O’Brien’s The Things They Carried, Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and Hemingway’s Soldier’s Home” with Keith Carabine; “Creating Better Photographs with Your Digital Camera (Beginner)” with Phil Krejcarek; and “Fiction into Film, or Jane Austen meets Rooster Cogburn” with Timothy Spurgin.

“Reflections on Storytelling” will concentrate on issues like O’Brien as a trauma artist; his compelling preoccupation with the role and ethical responsibility of the storyteller; and his bold, serious investment in the power of fiction to speak about unspeakable events.

“Creating Better Photographs with Your Digital Camera (Beginner)” is designed for beginners and will help participants gain greater control over their photography. Students are encouraged to bring a laptop computer.

These seminars take place from June 10 – 15.

“Fiction into Film, or Jane Austen meets Rooster Cogburn” will be held from June 17 – 22 and will focus on film adaptations, in particular Jane Austen’s Emma and Charles Portis’s True Grit.

Seminars are held at Björklunden’s lodge, south of Baileys Harbor. Classes meet weekday mornings and some evenings and include meals prepared by Björklunden’s resident chef.
