Blood Drives Scheduled in Door County

• Two blood drives are scheduled in Door County. One will be held at the Gibraltar High School gym on Wednesday, Nov. 27, from 11 am to 4 pm, another at Sturgeon Bay High School on Dec. 11 from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. One donation can save up to three lives, and donations help seniors earn scholarships. There will be free t-shirts for a limited amount of donors. Appointments can be made by calling 800.733.2767 or visiting redcrossblood.org, or walking in during the event.

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age – or 16 with parental consent – weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

• State Senator and potential gubernatorial candidate Kathleen Vinehout will be the featured speaker at the Door Democrats’ eighth annual Pie Party.

The party will held at the Bertschinger Community Center in Egg Harbor on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 3 to 5 pm. Attendees can select from an assortment of pies, with or without ice cream (seconds or thirds are encouraged). Elegant pies from premier Door County bakeries will go home with the lucky winners of bag raffles. Admission is $10 per person, $25 per family of three or more. The Bernie Connelly Volunteer of the Year award will also be presented.

• In celebration of its 50th anniversary as an established village in 2014, Egg Harbor is seeking businesses to help sponsor an art EGGstravaganza. Thirty eggs measuring two-feet high by 18 inches in diameter and seated on a four-foot high iron pedestal will be created by Door County artists. The completed eggs will be placed throughout the village in the summer of 2014 and will be auctioned off on Aug. 23, 2014, with proceeds shared by the artist and the village’s public arts fund. If you or your business would like to sponsor an egg, contact Michelle Anderson at the village office. Sponsorships are $150 and each sponsor can be involved in the placement and location of the egg for the summer of 2014. More information and artist application forms are available by clicking on the “Public Art/Eggstavaganza tab on the village website, villageofeggharbor.org.
