Common Council to Select District 2 Alder

Replacement applications accepted until Oct. 8

The next person to lead District 2 on the Sturgeon Bay Common Council will be selected by the council itself.

The vacancy was created when David Hayes tendered his resignation Sept. 11, effective Sept. 30. Hayes first took office in April 2018.

Those interested in filling the seat should send a brief statement about their background and interest in serving. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and reside within the district. Statements of interest are due by Oct. 8.

Candidates will be asked to appear at the Oct. 20 Common Council meeting to introduce themselves, and the council will vote on a replacement during that meeting.

“We appreciate the service given by Mr. Hayes and look forward to filling the District 2 seat so that citizens in District 2 are fully represented on the Council,” Mayor David Ward said.

Hayes did not respond to requests for comment, including inquiries as to whether he would remain in his position as chair of the Door County Democratic Party.

“As I understand, Mr. Hayes sold his home and business earlier this summer and is planning to travel and explore the countryside in his RV,” said City Administrator Josh VanLieshout.
