DCMM Accepting Entries for Boat Festival, Seeking Volunteer Docents

The Door County Maritime Museum (DCMM) Classic & Wood Boat Festival is fast approaching, and registrations are being taken for a number of events scheduled at the museum on Saturday and Sunday, August 1 and 2.

The festival annually features a remarkable assortment of vessels with judge’s awards for power, sail and self-powered boats. Festival attendees may also vote for People’s Choice award winners on August 1.

Events for the festival include The Sikaflex Challenge boat building competition, which returns with construction on Saturday and a race to follow on Sunday. Out of the 12 two-person teams that can potentially compete, less than a handful of spaces remain. Entry is free for boat entries and the Sikaflex event, and interested parties should contact the DCMM.

New for the 2009 festival is a “Paint the Bay” event, in which area artists are invited to participate in an open-air painting event. The event will be held on Saturday and will span the length of the bay. Works painted at this event must have a maritime theme and be completed and returned to the festival grounds by noon. A silent auction will follow from 12:30 – 4 pm at the museum, with proceeds benefitting both the artists and the museum. The entry fee for “Paint the Bay” is $10, and forms to pre-register are available online at http://www.dcmm.org or at the museum. Registrations will also be taken between 8 – 9 am on the morning of the event.

DCMM Call for Purves Volunteer Docents

The Door County Maritime Museum is seeking volunteer docents to lead daily tours aboard the tug John Purves. The remarkably restored 149-foot vessel has proven to be a huge hit with museum visitors since tours began last August. However, due to the tug’s appeal, the museum is in need of additional docents to meet the seven-day-a-week schedule.

The docent script provides for easy training and the opportunity to share a piece of Sturgeon Bay maritime history. Volunteers are asked to sign up for a daily shift from 10:30 am – 4 pm and can work as often as they wish.

Parties interested in volunteering should contact the museum at 920.743.7826.
