• The Jacksonville-based First Coast Golf Academy will render its services to Door County golfers this summer with the arrival of FCGA at Door County. The Orchards golf course will host the project, which will make FCGA the county’s first full-service golf academy.

Door County’s FCGA offers a number of golf schools and clinics – including the county’s only after-school Junior Program – as well as private individual or group instruction by appointment. Other programs at FCGA include a Corporate Golf Retreat Program, a specialty Putting Clinic, and a Ladies Wine & Cheese Clinic featuring weekly golf instruction and follow-up socials. All programs at FCGA at Door County provide professional instruction for novice, experienced, or professional players in all major areas of the game: full swing, short game, mental game, and body mechanics.

• Handverks Gardens, located at 10059 Highway 57 in Sister Bay, is now open for its third year. After selling potted plants and fresh garden bouquets at the Farmer’s Market in Sister Bay on Saturday mornings, owners Grace and Gerhard Bernhard decided to open the gardens, nursery, and studio on a daily basis.

While the couple promotes the use of native plants, they find planting favorite garden perennials alongside native plants creates gardens full of color, texture, depth and form. They practice sustainable garden principles by not using pesticides or chemical fertilizers, using composted mulch instead.

Customers are invited to stroll through the cottage gardens and enjoy viewing the plants in a natural garden setting. The studio features many products for the home and garden including garden books, original paintings, and woodcarvings.

For more information call 920.421.2985 or visit http://www.handverksgardens.com.

• Service Taxi Co., Sturgeon Bay’s hometown cab, revealed its strategy for countering the introduction of a publicly subsidized taxi company, Door 2 Door Rides, in the city early next month.

Door 2 Door Rides is scheduled to begin service August 2. Planning for this new transportation service was spearheaded by Door-Tran, a volunteer, nonprofit agency interested in encouraging low-cost, accessible transportation throughout the county.

On July 28, Service Taxi began offering dramatically reduced rates across the board. While these “rollbacks” are in reaction to the new competition, it’s not a new idea for Service Taxi.

A summary of Service Taxi’s new rates:

• Flat rate of $4 between any two points within the city limits.

• Flat rate of $1 per mile for out of town runs of less than an hour.

• Seniors (over 60) and those under 18 ride for $2 during the period of the reduced rates.

• Door-Tran Vouchers will be accepted.

• VIP punch-card program makes every 10th ride free after nine paid rides.

• Free stops along the way for 5 minutes or less.

The Service Taxi reduced rates runs from 6 am – 10 pm, Sunday through Friday, and 6 am – 6 pm on Saturday. For more information call 920.743.3443.
