State Representative Garey Bies (R-Sister Bay) and Senator Alan Lasee (R-DePere) received the Wisconsin Federation of Cooperatives’ (WFC) Friend of Cooperatives award for their leadership on advancing the Propane Safety Act through the legislature during the 2007-2008 legislative session. The presentation took place recently at Door County Cooperative’s bulk propane facility in Sturgeon Bay, and involved WFC staff and Door County Cooperative General Manager Brian Duquaine.

• PFLAG or Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays of Door County will meet at 5 pm on Sunday, Nov. 16 at Hope Church, corner of 12th and Michigan, Sturgeon Bay.

The group is open to anyone who has an interest in issues of importance to gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender people, and their families and friends. For more information contact Sandy at 920.743.8146.

• The Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Library would like to include your old photos of Christmases past in a display case throughout the month of December.

Please drop off photos of you, as a child, sitting on Santa’s lap, opening a present in front of the family Christmas tree, or decorating Christmas cookies on the kitchen table, as well as a card naming those in the photo, along with your phone number or address to Betty Curzon at the library by November 28.

Visit the library in December to view the display case and enter a contest in which participants must put names to the faces. The library offers a prize for the most correct guesses and the winner will be announced on December 22.

• Scandia Village has scheduled a community breakfast as a way to raise funds and awareness for the United Way of Door County, promoting the good work the organization does in our community.

The Good Samaritan Scandia Village is hopeful that everyone will take some time between 7:30 – 9:30 am on Wednesday, November 19 to visit with old friends, make new friends, and support a worthwhile cause in the Meadows & Villas Dining Room. While there is no cost for the breakfast, a goodwill offering will be appreciated.

United Way of Door County provides funding to more than 9,000 of our friends and neighbors through 42 programs that strive to provide better lives for residents of Door County.

A USDA Rural Development representative will be in Door County to provide information about the many loan and grant programs that are available to Wisconsin’s residents, communities and businesses.

Julie Felhofer, Area Specialist from the Rural Development Office in Shawano, will be at the Door County Senior Resource Center, 832 N. 14th Avenue in Sturgeon Bay, on Thursday, November 20, 2008 from noon – 2 pm to hold these special community outreach hours.

• The Kiwanis Club of Northern Door will hold their annual “All You Can Eat” Fish Fry on Friday, November 21 at the Mink River Basin Supper Club in Ellison Bay from 4 – 7 pm. Cost is $11 per person and includes dessert and coffee with tax and gratuity already figured in. Senior’s cost will be $10 per person and youngsters under 12 will cost $6 per person. Door County Board of REALTORS® members, Connie and Bob Erickson, showed their continued support to HELP of Door County as the organization celebrated its first anniversary at 219 Green Bay Road in Sturgeon Bay.

The Ericksons have assisted moving HELP three times since its inception in 1979. Two of the moves included real estate transactions through which the Ericksons donated their real estate services and commission back to HELP after each transaction. The Ericksons also donate a portion of each and every real estate sale they make to HELP of Door County on behalf of each buyer and seller.

• The Baileys Harbor Community Association celebrated Halloween by throwing a trick or treat party for the kids on Halloween night. With a very large turn out, winners to the candy guessing contest were Matthew “Elvis,” Janet Schmick, Evan Toerpe, Eliza Godfrey and Ryan Murphy. Winner of the adult prize of a nights stay at Blacksmith Inn was Kevin Norduhl.

The Halloween Gala could not happen, if it wasn’t for the generous donations and support from many community members.

The Community Foundation is pleased to announce that its new Children & Youth Fund is now accepting applications from those charities who are working to ensure a brighter future for our community’s children – whether it be alleviating their burdens today or helping them realize the opportunities of tomorrow.

U.S. Senator Russ Feingold will hold his final Listening Session of 2008 in Kewaunee County on Saturday, November 15. Senator Feingold has pledged to hold listening sessions in all of Wisconsin’s 72 counties each year of his six-year term and this will be the Senator’s 16th year of holding listening sessions. This session will mark the 72nd listening session of 2008, and the 1,152nd since 1993. For special accommodations at the listening sessions or more information call 608.828.1200.

The Kewaunee County listening session will be held at 9:15 am at the Red River Town Hall, E0505 County Road S, Town of Red River. The meeting will last up to an hour.

• The Door County Green Fund is currently recruiting individuals to serve on the organization’s Board of Directors. The board consists of business professionals who assist in directing, organizing and implementing the Green Fund’s annual fundraising campaign by meeting five to six times a year, usually a Tuesday or a Wednesday morning at 8 am.

The Door County Green Fund is a private, non-profit organization established to contribute to the permanent protection of a variety of open space areas and, therefore, the unique quality of life treasured by Door County residents and visitors. The organization raises money each year, primarily from Door County businesses, and then grants that money to organizations involved in the long term preservation of Door County.

• After a summer-long raffle, the winner of Northern Door Children’s Center (NDCC) 2008 Smart Passion Coupe and $5,000 is Marko Sheremeta from Chicago. The winning ticket was drawn October 26 by 3-year-old Claire Swanson. Sheremeta bought his single ticket at Pumpkin Patch in Egg Harbor from Beth Alumbaugh – who sold the most raffle tickets (385) and won $1,000 for herself!

The Smart Passion Coupe and cash prize were donated by Chicagoan and former Door County resident Judith Blazer, who has sponsored all five raffles for the non-profit center.

• The Sturgeon Bay Jaycees are hosting a Scrap-A-Thon Fundraiser starting Friday, Nov. 14 at 5 pm and going through Sunday, Nov. 16 at 4 pm. The event will be held at the Jaycee Clubhouse, 340 Jaycee Court, Sturgeon Bay.

The cost for the event, which includes the main entrée for all meals along with your space to scrapbook, is $25 per person or $20 if you bring a dish to pass. • The Ridges Sanctuary was the recipient of one of Door County Community Foundation’s Environmental Grants to support Door County’s first Wisconsin Naturalist Program. The grant is earmarked for start-up costs for equipment and staff time for the Door County Wisconsin Naturalist Program, which will be offered each year in the fall.

Similar to a Master Gardener Program and based on the evolving program for the State, the Wisconsin Naturalist Program provides opportunities to engage students of all ages and walks of life in environmental stewardship and citizen science. The Door County Wisconsin Naturalist Program seeks to gather a group of volunteers dedicated to learning about and preserving Door County’s rich biological diversity who then can share this knowledge through education, outreach, and service within our community.

• As the holiday season nears, the United States Postal Service (USPS) is urging people to plan their international shipping, which has been made easier with the USPS online system.

Online customers can use a simplified customs and address label form combined into one. There are guidelines to take customers through any special requirements for foreign destinations, and people can save on postage when shipping online at usps.com.

For individuals who would like holiday cards and packages to arrive at international destinations by December 25, the postal service has published recommended shipping dates for their various services – Global Express Guaranteed, Express Mail International, Priority Mail International, and First-Class Mail International – to a variety of locations.
