Door County Cross Country Ski Report for Dec. 30

Unseasonably mild temperatures December 29-31 are eroding ski conditions across all of Door County but there are still places left to ski. Our ski trail groomers report the following conditions:

Potawatomi State Park

Conditions: Fair with deteriorating conditions. Last groomed Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010. North loops were in good condition for skating and striding. South loops fair for skating and striding as these area needs more leveling to take out roller waves.

Crossroads at Big Creek

Conditions: Fair but deteriorating. Thanks to the great snowfall last Tuesday and Wednesday with over 6 inches total snow, cross-country skiing conditions at the Crossroads had been very good. All trails were leveled and rolled on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010 after a busy week of skiing. No new snow, but the base is good and should hold up in shady areas even with the warm temperatures these next few days.

Snowkraft (formerly Cherry Hills Nordic)

Conditions: Fair to good. Due to an excellent base, skiing should be okay when it is not drizzling, so you are welcome to come and see how it is. Planning to add snow to the woods and orchard trails New Years Eve IF the trails are solid enough to travel on so that the orchard will be skiable Jan. 1 or at the latest Jan. 2. The woods should weather the warm temperatures fine, maybe needing to add a little snow to a few areas. If we receive more rain than is in the forecast, this could change, and possibly only the woods will be skiable.

Whitefish Dunes State Park

Conditions: Fair. Last groomed on Dec. 22. Trails have been fair to good. With the current meltdown it is unknown what condition the trails will be in once the temp drops below freezing. Trails had held up quite well and tracks are still in good shape despite much use. Portions of the Yellow trail on north side of County WD were in very good condition with very little debris and excellent track. However, extreme caution is urged in the area of the third beach access with the very thin cover over ground disturbed by a recent construction project. To reduce further deterioration of the trails skiers are advised to stay off the trails until the temps are below freezing again.

Peninsula State Park

Conditions: Fair to poor. Trails at Peninsula are still covered but melting fast. Last groomed on Tuesday, Dec. 28.

Newport State Park

Conditions: Poor. Trail base still exists but trails are in poor conditions with debris and rocks showing.
