Door County Emergency Services Releases EPCRA Notice

Door County Emergency Services releases the annual Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA) notice. Federal Law P.L. 99-499 was enacted in October of 1986 by the US Congress to protect and inform all citizens of the existence of hazardous chemicals that may be manufactured, stored, distributed or used in a community. This law is the Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act. It is referenced to as Title III of the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA).

The Community Right to Know Act was designed to give the public access to their community’s chemical storage information. The more you know about hazardous materials in your community, the better prepared you, and your community will be.

The law requires facilities to provide information on any hazardous materials present, in terms of both potential risk and their effects on public health, safety, and the environment. Information about the hazardous chemicals and locations is available for public review at the Door County Emergency Services Office; 319 S. 18th Ave., Sturgeon Bay.

Information available includes: lists of facilities reporting the use of hazardous and extremely hazardous substances; material data safety sheets; inventory forms of chemicals; emergency response plans if any are filed; and follow-up emergency notice of spills from facilities.

Telephone inquiries as to the specific information contained in these files will not be accepted by Door County. Information about SARA Title III including Federal Registers can be obtained free of charge by calling the toll free US Environmental Protection Agency hotline (800.621.8431).

Locally, copies of the documents may be made at the at the expense of the requester and at rates and time frames established by Door County. Information available is limited to compliance with P.L. 99-499 and does not include all chemicals that may pose a threat to humans, animals, or the environment.
