“Doork” Offered in Silent Auction

For reasons known only to him, Jim Maronek has been collecting weird headlines from the Door County Advocate over the last 20 years. Now, he has assembled them into a large montage named “Doork.” All together, there are about 96 goofy snippets in the 30” by 45” piece.

Examples of the clippings include: “Dance will help clear minefields,” “Airport overruns irritate Ephraim Village officials” and “New Subway a hit in Sturgeon Bay.” There is also a lighthouse photo caption which must be seen to be believed.

“Doork” will be on display in Maronek’s gallery at Silver Poplar Studios in Ellison Bay, to launch the gallery’s re-opening on August 15, after an extended closure due to “sudba” (the Russian word for “destiny”). The amusing collection will continue to be offered by silent auction until closing on October 11, when it will be sold to the highest bidder. It is suitable for hanging in a Door County vestibule, guest room, or especially on the wall of a powder room for extended contemplation.

The gallery, at 1519 East Door Bluff Road in Ellison Bay, is open Fridays and Saturdays from 1 – 4 pm, or by appointment or destiny. It is situated in a barn called Ellison Wonderland, part of a Russian estate which includes award-winning gardens and Russian cottages. Maronek’s less frivolous art is also on display, and will be included in the Gills Rock Arts and Entertainment Tour (“G.R.E.A.T. Days”) September 26 through 28.
