Eclipse Viewing Information And Events

The total solar eclipse happening above North America on April 8 will not be total from a Door County viewing platform – the moon will cover 86.9% of the sun – but it will still be a nearly total event that skywatchers won’t want to miss.

To help you experience the event, two public viewings are taking place, plus an informational session prior to the eclipse to get you caught up on all the particulars of the astronomical event.

The Door Peninsula Astronomical Society will host a solar eclipse viewing event on Monday, April 8, 12:30-3 pm, at the Ray and Ruthie Stonecipher Astronomy Center.

The astronomy center is located at 2200 Utah St. in Sturgeon Bay.

Newport State Park in Ellison Bay will also host a viewing party on Monday, April 8, 12:30-3:30 pm. Guests should bring their own chairs and meet at Lot 3. A Wisconsin state parks vehicle sticker is required.

To learn about the eclipse prior to the event, head to Crossroads at Big Creek on Saturday, April 6 at 2 pm. During the organization’s weekly Science Saturday program, geared towards elementary-aged children but open to learners of all ages, guests will receive solar-viewing glasses and learn how plants, amphibians and other wildlife react to the eclipse.

Crossroads is located at 2041 Michigan St. in Sturgeon Bay.
