Erica Hannickel Talks Flowers

The Door Garden Club will end its first season with a presentation by nonfiction author Erica Hannickel, Oct. 24 at 10 am.

Hannickel’s talk will focus on two 19th-century empresses who loved orchids: Empress Cixi of China, and Empress Eugenie of France. Several genera of orchids assisted both women in rising to power and were part of France and Britain’s forcible “opening” of China to trade in 1860.

Hannickel is an Environmental History professor at Northland College in Ashland, a Master Gardener and the owner of more than 150 orchids. Her most recent book, Orchid Obsession, has been shortlisted for the 2023 Wisconsin Library Association’s Best Nonfiction Award.

A luncheon, book signing and sale, short business meeting and flower-show critique session will follow the presentation at the Donald and Carol Kress Pavilion, 7845 Church St. in Egg Harbor. Registration is required at doorgardenclub.org.
