Gardner Gab: Introducing New Column From Town of Gardner

By Michele Ploor

Hello Town of Gardner residents and welcome to your column. This column has been created for you. It’s about you, about what you need to know, want to know, and possibly some things you could have lived without ever knowing.

It’s my goal to give you, the residents, a little touch of what’s happening in our community. If you have an event, birth, marriage, graduation, or your Aunty Em, grandkids, cousin or brother came to visit from New York, let me know and I’m glad to share. What better way to get to know each other. Email me at: [email protected].

I’m Michele Ploor. I’ve been married to Aaron Ploor (originally from Sevastopol) for 21 delightful years. Together we have two children, a daughter who is a sophomore, and a son who is a junior at Southern Door High School. We have lived in the town of Gardner for 19 years.

I was born in Sturgeon Bay, moved out of the state for a couple years as a kid only to come back and grow up in Valmy. According to my Grandfather’s big black binder my family is from one of the original Belgian settlers in Brussels.

I am currently on my third term with the town board; official title, Supervisor number three. I also sit on the Gardner Plan Commission. Five years for me there. Currently I am holding the title of Madame Secretary.

Another successful Door County Fair is in the books. The fair committee changed not only the entrance fees, but the midway ride company too. Great changes on both ends. Several local kids showed animals. Sounds like everyone did well there. Here’s hoping those kids are putting their winnings away for college.

Three local residents participated in the demolition derby – Chad Williams, Bailey LaViolet and Dillon Ploor. Looks like they all had a really good time. I expect to see them all out again next year.

What you need to know:

The town board meeting is held on the second Wednesday of every month at 6:30 pm at the town hall located at the corner of Four Corners Road and County C. These meetings are always open to the public and we’d love to see you there.

The Gardner Plan Commission will have its September meeting on Sept. 18 at 8 am also at the town hall. These meetings are also open to the public. Currently we are working on the town’s recreational plan. We are evaluating all of the public water access sites (one at a time), applying for grants and looking at what we can do to make these more accessible and user-friendly for you, the residents.

Reminders:

  • Find contact information for your town officials, garbage schedules, and more at townofgardner.org.
  • Garbage pickup will be a day late for all residents the week of Sept. 4 due to the Labor Day holiday. Please have your cans at the edge of the road no later than 6 am, with the lid opening to the road.

Dates to keep in mind:

  • Southern Door Snow Travelers will have their annual corn roast the weekend of Aug. 26. They are located off of County CC.
  • Southern Door students head back to class Sept. 5. Keep an eye out for these little guys waiting for the bus.

Now you get out there and make it a great day.
