Get Motivated: Door County Sport-Related Activities

The slower pace of the Door County winter can lull some folks into hibernation, but there are plenty of opportunities to get off the couch and out of the house when the weather turns. The following leagues and open gyms should provide you with some ideas for staying active and fit through the off-season – and satisfy some competitive juices as well.

Northern Door Broomball League

• Wednesday nights in January and February, Teresa K. Hilander Community Ice Rink, Sister Bay

Broomball has become one of the most popular – and entertaining to watch – of winter activities in Door County. Between 6 and 8 teams usually take to the ice in Sister Bay each Wednesday night in January and February. Broomball is similar in play to hockey, without the skates and with a small soccer-style ball in place of a puck.

New teams and sponsors are welcome, and those interested in forming a team or connecting with an existing squad should call Mike Mercier at 920.421.0989 or email [email protected] or call Mike Mead at 920.421.0355.

Door County Classic Basketball League

• Sundays, Nov. 28 – March, St. Peter’s Church, Sturgeon Bay

This adult men’s basketball league plays every Sunday night from Nov. 28 through late March at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay. Last year there were six teams in the league, but new teams are welcome. The league fee is $450, which covers gym rental, referees, and scorekeepers. To inquire about forming a team call Todd Maas at 920.746.8684 or 920.493.1220.

Over-30 League Basketball

• Wednesdays, Sturgeon Bay High School

The over-30 league plays on Wednesday nights at Sturgeon Bay high school on the “small courts.” The league consists of eight teams, which sometimes need re-enforcements. If you’re interested in latching on with a squad, inquire about openings by calling Jeff Peterson at 920.655.0043.

• Northern Door Y: Mondays and Wednesdays, 1 – 3 pm; Fridays, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm

• Sturgeon Bay Y: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:45 am – noon

This obscure sport (played with a larger paddle than ping pong, a whiffle ball, and a smaller court than tennis) quickly gained a following when introduced last winter at the Northern Door Y. Now there are several opportunities each week to play at both the Fish Creek and Sturgeon Bay program centers. There is no league, and people are free to show up and play, but non-Y members must pay a fee.

Other Activities

Gym space can be reserved at both the Northern Door and Sturgeon Bay Y program centers if there is enough interest in an activity. Those interested in indoor soccer at the Northern Door Y are encouraged to call the Y at 920.868.3660 for information. Ben Rikkola, Youth and Family Director at the Sturgeon Bay Y, would consider starting Badminton if there is enough interest. He can be contacted at the Y at 920.743.4949.
