Gibraltar Approves Locker Room Renovations

The Gibraltar School Board approved the renovation of its high school locker rooms, weight room, and storage areas. The boys athletic locker room is currently housed in a former storage room with little floor space and ventilation, and has no direct access to a school hallway.

School Board President Sally Pfeifer said health issues arose with the boys locker room this fall, when several football players developed infections.

The renovation proposal includes the creation of four locker rooms, one each for boys and girls physical education, and one each for girls and boys varsity athletics with adequate ventilation and access to showers, toilets and a school hallway. The weight room will be moved to the end of the gymnasium, with new exit doors created for the gym on the north wall.

The project will be funded with $693,023 from the building repair fund over two years and $146,877 from the school’s operating reserve.

The school board will also vote on changes to its elementary class size guidelines at its Feb. 13 meeting. The school will see an incoming kindergarten class of 26 students next year. With enrollment dropping, the school will move from a three-classroom elementary school to a two-classroom elementary school.
