Gibraltar Sports Have Big Spring

Gibraltar High School, so long an athletic doormat, is now home to perfection.

Gibraltar won its first Packerland Conference title since 1988.

The school’s baseball team completed an unblemished Packerland Conference championship season May 20 by defeating Green Bay NEW Lutheran 14 – 2. It marks Gibraltar’s first conference title since Rod “Chief” Billerbeck won his final crown in 1988, when one of his players was Jay Kita, the current Gibraltar baseball coach.

The baseball team isn’t alone in raising the bar at the Packerland’s second smallest school. The Gibraltar girls track team won its first ever conference title, and the boys golf placed first in Regionals, advancing to Sectional play.

“Track is a numbers sport,” said coach Paul Bremel. “We finally have good numbers and a lot of quality athletes within those numbers.”

At the May 17 conference meet the girl’s 4×100 meter relay team broke the conference meet record, running in 4:13.64. Rychia Bosman set a school record this season in the pole vault, clearing 9’6″, while Ashley Aune set the 400-meter mark in 1:00.64. The team placed second in regional competition May 24. Sectional competition was scheduled for May 27.

The golf team finished first out of 10 teams at the May 24 Regional meet at Golden Sands in Bonduel, cinching a trip to the Sectional finals. Senior Ian Johnson led the Vikings to a resounding victory with a score of 75, and was awarded the meet’s medalist honors.
