The Door County Historical Society will host its monthly dinner and program meeting on June 22 at 6 pm at the Lodge at Leathem Smith. The program features Evergreen Nursery and will be delivered by owner Ron Amos.

Evergreen Nursery Co., Inc. is the oldest nursery in Wisconsin. The nursery was established in downtown Sturgeon Bay more than 150 years ago and moved to its current location several years later. From the evergreen seedlings George Pinney harvested from Door County’s forests and swamps in 1864, the Nursery has become one of the largest wholesale nurseries in Wisconsin producing more than three million plants a year. Amos will discuss Evergreen Nursery’s evolution into the establishment of the business it is today.

Amos started his career at Evergreen 33 years ago as a plant propagator. He developed the greenhouse operation for the nursery and moved up the company ladder as production manager, vice president. Amos purchased the nursery in 2001 on the retirement of Tom Pinney, Jr., the great-grandson of George Pinney.

The family-style dinner will include fried cod, grilled chicken breasts with teriyaki glaze, pineapple salsa, baby carrots, garlic mashed potatoes, assorted dessert bars and coffee. The member dinner cost is $20 and the guest fee is $24. Guests may attend the presentation only for a $6 fee. Reservations are due by June 17 by mailing payment to Door County Historical Society, PO Box 71, Sturgeon Bay WI 54235. For more information call 920.431.2332.
