Just Desserts

On a rainy day, a few Pulse employees meet at the Mission Grille in Sister Bay, a warm, welcoming restaurant with dim lights, jazzy tunes sounding from hidden speakers, and a menu of fabulous, fun cocktails and martinis, as well as tempting, homemade desserts.

Because it is Monday, aka “martini Monday,” at the Mission, we receive half-off martinis and scan the dessert menu. What is one to choose: Chocolate Rum Cake or the Mission Berry Cobbler or Caramel Flan? Then, there at the bottom of the list is The Trilogy, a sampling of each dessert. Done.

• Mission Berry Cobbler: a warm blend of cherries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries with a crispy topping and small scoop of vanilla ice cream. Yummy.

• Chocolate Rum Cake: a rich moist cake with chocolate chips and walnuts. Amazing.

• Caramel Flan: a traditional Spanish baked custard coated with a silky caramel. The taste is something like burnt marshmallow. “But in a good way,” says Nik Garvoille. “It’s almost like a s’more. It’s flantastic.” Correct.

“I think it would be hard to be a food critic,” says Myles Dannhausen Jr. “It’s hard to not sound cliché,” he takes another bite of the berry cobbler, “I would write it’s just good!”

That it is – the desserts, the ambiance, the swapping of adjectives to describe the tasty experiences – good.
