Letter to the Editor: Assembly Version Didn’t Make It

Representative Kitchens – I find your recent article in the Peninsula Pulse relative to the school safety regulations, Assembly Bill 1031, was misleading and leaving a false impression on the minds of the public in general.

You state, “The school safety package will require purchasers of rifles and shotguns to go through the same stringent background checks as those who purchased handguns.” Assembly Bill 1031 was amended in the Senate to strike the above statement from the bill before the Senate passed it.

On March 24, 2018, Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald published an article in the Appleton Post-Crescent which stated, “Assembly bill requiring background checks on long gun purchasers is all but dead.”

Your article, Mr. Kitchens, that was published six days later in the Peninsula Pulse, March 30 through April 6 issue, would have us believe that background checks for long guns was a law in Wisconsin, which of course just wasn’t so.
