Madison Woman Storms to Door County Triathlon Record

Nicole Heininger of Madison set a new course record for women in the Door County Half Iron Triathlon Sunday. Heininger finished in 4:24:51, nearly 13 minutes ahead of second place Caryn Herrick of St. Louis Park, Minnesota. Rachel Illgen of Brookfield finished third. 

On the men’s side, Alfredo Ramirez Pinho of Verona won in a time of 4:03:26, topping Tyler Tanko of Sherwood, who finished in 4:04:41. Luke Beirl of Hayward finished third. Sunday’s event featured 327 finishers who completed a tough swim through choppy waters, a bike course shaded by some welcome cloud cover, and a run in warm but not overly hot sun.

In Saturday’s sprint distance, Brian Andryk of Verona topped 892 finishers. Andryk finished the .25-mile swim, 18-mile bike and 3.1-mile run in 1:05:43, just five seconds ahead of Timothy Bontrager of Minneapolis. 

Robin Pomeroy, also of Verona, finished first among the women in 1:10:53.  The Kids Triathlon took place in the afternoon, and the Half Iron Triathlon takes place today. In that race athletes will take on a 1.25-mile swim, 56-mile bike and a 13.1-mile run to the finish.
